Acne affects about 85 percent of the population at some time in their life and is the most common skin disease treated by dermatologists. It is a chronic disorder of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands that is characterized by black heads, pimple outbreaks, cysts, infected abscesses, and (sometimes) scarring. In the normal course of events, sebum, made in the sebaceous glands deep down in the skin, travel up the hair follicle to emerge through a fine pore on the surface. However, when hormones cause too much oil to be produced, or skin cells block the path of the oil, you can get blackheads or whiteheads. Further exacerbating these conditions are skin-care or makeup products that can build up in the pore, along with skin cells that can get trapped in the sticky sebum.
When sebum and skin cells are sitting in a pore that is not covered over by skin, they are exposed to the air, which causes the cells to oxidize and turn black. When the sebum and skin cells are sitting in a pore that is covered by skin, they are not exposed to air and therefore stay clear, but form a slight white bump under the skin.
If the blockage occurs deeper down, inflammation and primary bacterial infection combine to produce a much larger and angrier spot, which can spread when touched with dirty fingers. When the pimple becomes infected, a whitehead or pustule can develop. This is the type of blemish that can burst and may eventually scar. The biggest blemish of all is a cyst – the red, swollen result of a deeper infection. If you develop cysts, you should definitely seek the advice of a dermatologist.
Acne is INDEED strongly influenced by your DIET. One of acne’s causes is Acidosis, the toxic condition of the body that results from the retention of waste matter in the colon. This is a natural result of an orthodox diet that consists mainly of concentrated starches and sugars (cereal, bread, pasta, cookies, grain products of all type). These types of foods leave behind impurities in the body. Impurities in the body can be eliminated via the bowels, kidneys, lungs and – you guessed it - the skin (ah-ha!). In addition, eating refined carbohydrates and sugar leads to a surge of insulin and an insulin-like growth factor called IGF-1 in your body. This can lead to an excess of male hormones, which cause pores in the skin to secrete sebum. Additionally, IGF-1 causes skin cells known as keratinocytes to multiply, a process that is associated with acne.
Your attitude and your ability to cope with stress also plays a significant role in the development of acne. Doctors have seen a connection between stress and acne for a long time. Studies have shown that the body produces more androgens when a person is under stress. The increase may trigger acne flare-ups by stimulating the sebaceous glands to pump out more sebum. Even physical stresses, such as colds, allergies, surgery, or menstruation can trigger break-outs.

- Reduce stress and eliminate resentments. Worry, fear, anger, jealousy, frustration – somehow these resentments have become acceptable parts of the modern day mindset. Resentments have the ability to make just about every disease we encounter worse, and this includes acne. Resentments are many times a result of overwhelming stress. That's why it is so important to have an effective tool to help you with your stress before it becomes overwhelming.
