Oily skin feels relaxed and supple, but looks shiny and is much more prone to outbreaks of spots. This is because of a heightened production of sebum (oil) by the sebaceous (oil producing) glands - too much sebum can cause a blockage in the duct, leading to inflammation and pimples. Sebaceous glands are unevenly distributed, being more concentrated around the scalp, on the forehead, along the nose and on the chin, and scarcer on the cheeks and neck, and around the eyes. As a result, most skins tend to be oily only in patches.
There is no way to completely prevent oily skin from occurring, nor would you want to; a light sheen of oil is the essence of that youthful glow! However, EXCESSIVE oil on your skin may exacerbate the clogging of pore openings, which leads to a variety of skin problems such as Acne.
The amount of oil that an individual makes is determined by genetics. It is affected by hormones and what is called an "end organ response". The oil gland is considered the end organ because it is this gland that is acted upon by hormones.
Many people have the same level of hormones, but make different amount of oil because their oil glands respond differently. During adolescence, a surge in the level of sex hormones, known as androgens, creates a problem of oily skin where previously there was none. The reason for this is that androgens enlarge and stimulate the sebaceous glands, causing them to produce more sebum.
While this stimulation is not directly responsible for acne, the extra sebum for which they're responsible produces more fatty acids when a comedo plug closes off a pore opening. The additional fatty acids increase the amount of inflammation, and more severe acne occurs.
Despite all the trouble that sebum causes, it is very important to the maintenance of the skin. When the system is working properly, sebum performs the important job of helping to lubricate your skin. Sebum also carries with it dead skin cells shedding from your hair follicle walls. For someone with oily skin, the best thing to do is to take measures to keep pores from getting clogged and forming acne lesions.
Oily Skin Care Tips
- Be sure to cleanse and tone twice daily with Feierabend’s Breakout Buster Cleanser and Breakout Buster Toner to control oil and breakouts.
- If your skin is extremely oily, normal moisturizers may be too heavy. In this case, use Feierabend’s Face Firming Serum once a day.
- For oil trapped within the sebaceous duct, once a week you should exfoliate with Feierabend’s Wildflower Honey Glow and apply one of Feierabend’s oil-absorbing Mask treatments such as the Pumpkin Peel Enzyme Mask.
- Do not use any oil-based cosmetics, which will only aggravate oily skin and create further blemishes. Use water-based, non-comedogenic cosmetics.
- Also remember, regardless of your skin’s level of oil, your hair may be oily, contributing to breakout problems, especially around the forehead. Use an organic shampoo to thoroughly cleanse your hair.
